Forest Bathing and Yin Yoga at the Gate of Lapland

March 21-24, 2019

At the end of March, when the light returns to northern Scandinavia combining the best of winter and early spring, we spend a weekend together for a unique experience in the middle of the northern wilderness. We eat and sleep well, do yoga and enjoy spending time in nature. All in order to strengthen our bodies and return to our natural state of health, balance, and joy.

The weekend retreat is led by experienced forest guide Cornelia Lohf together with our beloved yoga teacher Maria Bergmark. Cornelia is an Associate Coach (IFC) and inspirer, known for creating forest experiences that invite all the senses. Maria has more than 20 years of experience of yoga and her style is very straightforward, simple and inviting, requiring no previous experience of yoga.

We want this weekend to be a pause from everyday life, to let you focus entirely on yourself and your own well-being. You stay in a newly renovated eco hotel, eat well-cooked organic food in a restaurant overlooking the river, and get to experience the untouched and beautiful Scandinavian nature.

Every day we spend at least two hours in the forest, guided by Cornelia. We will explore Shinrin-Yoku (“forest bathing”) – a nature therapy originating from Japan, filled with health benefits. During these hours we will let our stress melt away, reunite with nature, and break the cycle of stress. Shinrin-Yoku has lots of proven health benefits, and we are proud and happy to be the first to offer this in the northern Sweden.

Yin Yoga classes are offered a couple of times during the weekend. Yin Yoga is a calm and meditative form of yoga where we hold each position 3-5 minutes, to access the deep connective tissue. We use props like blankets and bolsters to be as comfortable as possible, and all the exercises are done with relaxed muscles. All yoga offered during the weekend is suitable both for beginners as well for more experienced yogis.

Our weekend together is spent in the small village of Granö in northern Sweden, where we eat, sleep and do yoga overlooking the magnificent Ume River, surrounded by the endless northern woods. In addition to the weekends scheduled activities, there will also be free time for you to explore the surroundings, go for a walk, or just be. This weekend is for you, to recover and replenish.

Cornelia is an Associate Coach (IFC) helping people to find their own path in life, working in both Swedish, English and her native language German. Her unique concept where she combines coaching with the north-Swedish nature is deeply appreciated. She also has a rich experience of pilgrimages, with over 5600 kilometers walked in Spain and Portugal, and firmly believes that hiking solo can offer amazing possibilities for deep personal transformation.

”The peace and calm in nature can unlock our brain to new possibilities. The nature reduces the amount of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, while at the same time stimulating our creative brain. Often times nature easily removes headaches, tension and sleeping problems, while at the same time leaving us with new impressions, new thoughts, and new paths – both on the inside and the outside.”

Maria is the founder of Yogaretreats Northern Lights, works full time at Yogastudion Umeå and has devoted almost 20 years of her life so far to yoga. During her many long trips to Asia, she has tried out most yoga styles and philosophies. Over time, she found her very own way of living and teaching, all based on what she loves the most: simplicity.

"To keep things simple and not lose my temper over unimportant things is pretty much how I live my life. I do not like the airy fairy stuff in yoga. For me, stepping onto the mat is my way of connecting to my body and soul, just as simple as that. Many like the way I teach because I'm ordinary. No New Age stuff in my classes. To me, a retreat is a wonderful opportunity to dive deeper into yoga for a little longer, to become more present, and to guide people into that experience."
